My Te Reo Māori Learning Journey 2025
Pepeha
Thanks to Massy Lecturer, Timu Niwa, I love having a pepeha of my own that I know off by heart in te reo Māori.
Voice Recordings in Te Reo Māori
Recordings of waiata I have participated in during my time studying the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching at Massey University, and a voice recording of me learning words in te reo Māori at Te Pūkenga.
Practicum Two at Manukura
I was very fortunate to have been placed at Manukura for Practicum Two where I was able to witness first hand the cultural competencies in the Tātaiako put into action with excellence. It was a wonderful experience and I was so privileged to be immersed in an environment that honours and teaches tikanga Māori. I learnt a lot.

Yr 9 Class Opening with Karakia
This was the first time the class said the karakia together and they did so well.
A Lesson on Māori Art Taught to me by Tanu Aumua ( - Associate Kaiako)
I'm so glad I accepted the challenge to teach a junior lesson on 'What is Māori Art?' It was such a privilege to have the opportunity to learn about Māori art from someone who is Māori and to experience teaching it to a class who has Māori whakapapa. I was very fortunate to have been taught not only how to teach the lesson but also the correct content by Tanu Aumua, who is an expert in the area of Māori Art. Below is the PDF presentation I created for the lesson.

Tanu Aumua taught me about contemporary Māori art and I took the junior class through the lesson using the worksheet below.

Tangata Whenuatanga
In art class we encouraged ākonga
to use a photo that symbolised a
place that was meaningful to them.
One ākonga chose to use an image
of their Marae.
Ako
Education outside of the classroom plays a big role in the learning that takes place at Manukura. The waka ama team are up and at the lagoon by 6am every weekday, showing great stamina.
Te Reo Course for Beginners at Te Pūkenga
When I found out I was placed at Manukura for Practicum Two, I jumped online and enrolled into a 10 week Te Reo course for Beginners at Te Pūkenga taught by Lorraine Keefe. We had class every Wednesday 6pm - 8pm, which overlapped with 8 weeks on Practicum Two. I made it to every class for 10 weeks. The te reo class had a great learning environment, we were all there to learn more about Te Ao Māori as well as Te Reo Māori. It was a really positive experience.
I wanted to improve my te reo mainly so I could build better connections with ākonga. Being at Manukura was a great way to practice my greetings and farewell in te reo. Near the end of practicum in a couple of lessons, I used te reo when speaking about the colours and ākonga responded well.
Along with the fun and informing Level One Te Reo classes at Massey University with Timu Niwa in 2024, I have been so blessed to have learnt some of the basics of Te Reo Māori.
